A panic attack is a sudden surge of intense fear or discomfort that peaks quickly and can feel overwhelming. It may happen unexpectedly or in response to a specific trigger.
During a panic attack, the body’s “fight or flight” system becomes activated — even when there is no immediate danger.
Common symptoms include:
- Racing or pounding heart
- Shortness of breath or chest tightness
- Dizziness or feeling faint
- Sweating or shaking
- Tingling sensations
- Feeling detached or “not real”
- Fear of losing control or something terrible happening
Although panic attacks can feel frightening, they are not dangerous and will pass. The symptoms are a result of the body’s natural stress response being activated too strongly or too quickly.
Some people experience occasional panic attacks, while others may develop Panic Disorder, where attacks are recurrent and accompanied by ongoing worry about having another episode.
At Connected Minds, we approach panic symptoms through a calm, connection-focused lens — helping individuals understand their nervous system, build regulation skills, and regain a sense of safety and confidence.
